The Yabakei Railway, affectionately known as “Yatetsu,” began operations in 1913 (Taishō era). Running approximately 36 km from its starting point at Nakatsu Station to Morizane Onsen Station, the line followed the Yamakuni River and offered stunning views of famed scenic spots such as Hotokezaka, Ao no Dōmon, and Tekihippō.
Today, the railway is registered as a Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property. Visitors who explore its two quietly preserved tunnels can experience a uniquely tranquil, almost mystical atmosphere.
