18.Monument for Farmland Liberation
■Commentary
Arishima Takeshi, Takeo’s father, built a shrine within Arishima Farm and named it Iyateru Shrine in 1905. In 1916, Arishima Takeo took a stroll within the farm and relocated the shrine to its present location. In 1922, he gathered the farm labourers here and distributed his agricultural land amongst them for free. He did so on the condition that they manage it according to the principles of mutual aid. To convey their gratitude about the farmland liberation to future generations, the former farm labourers erected this monument in 1924.
