The Mainakashima district in Anabuki-cho, Mima City is on a river island between the Yoshino River and its tributary, the Myoren River, and was once a major Ai production area. Due to its terrain and the fact that it was a river island, it often suffered flood damage, but the rich soil flowing from upstream was suitable for Ai cultivation. To remain prepared against the floods, the people of Mainakashima surrounded the area with dikes and bamboo forests and built their ai yashiki mansions on top of high stone walls. Luxurious residences and high stone walls prepared for flood remain in each place today and provide a glimpse of fight with flood and prosperity by the Ai plant at the time.
