25.The Collection of the Ako City Tabuchi Museum of Art (Tabuchi Memorial Hall)
■Commentary
Adjacent to the Tabuchi-shi Garden is the Ako City Tabuchi Museum of Art (Tabuchi Memorial Hall), where works of art, crafts, and other items gifted to Ako City by the Tabuchi family are on display. The wide-ranging collection includes paintings, writing, items used in tea ceremony, items used in wedding ceremonies, and kemari (a football game played by the aristocracy) equipment. In addition to its value as a collection of arts and crafts, its items also serve as important historical materials showing us the lifestyle and culture of those who made a fortune as salt farm landowners and salt merchants. Of these materials, the Nyobo-Sanjurokkasen-Gajo (a book of paintings accompanying poems written by thirty-six great female poets) and the Tabuchi-ke Bunsho (“Tabuchi Family Documents”) have been designated as Cultural Properties of Ako City. The exhibitions at the Tabuchi Memorial Hall, which include tea ceremony utensils and a variety of other artwork, are carefully organized to suit the atmosphere of each of the four seasons.
