32.The Scenery in Ako Misaki
■Commentary
At the tip of the cape at the east end of the Higashihama Salt Farm, amidst the streetscapes of Misaki, one can get a sweeping view of the Seto Inland Sea, with its gentle waves and many beautiful islands. Since long ago, this beautiful spot has attracted writers and artists including the painter Shiba Kokan. In the Meiji period, attractions such as beaches, Japanese-style inns, and restaurants opened and prospered. From the Taisho period to the Showa period, the development of the area as a tourist spot continued and included the construction of new roads and residential areas. Still today, Misaki attracts tourists who come for things such as its hot spring resorts and scenic beauty, and in recent years, the area has gained popularity among young people for its food and because Misaki’s Iwatsuhime Shrine is believed to give good luck to those searching for a spouse. As a result, there are a lot of visitors each year. In addition, the view of the sunset from Misaki has been chosen as one of Japan’s Top 100 Sunsets.
