04.Ako’s Salt-making Tools
■Commentary
This diverse collection of items, many of which were gathered together under the supervision of Dr. Hiroyama Gyodo’s group, is centered around the salt-making tools used at the irihama salt farms on Ako’s eastern and western shores but also includes things such as historical documents, materials related to the management of salt production and distribution, and tools used in daily life. Through them, we can gain an understanding of the way people lived and worked at the salt farms, something which can no longer be observed directly. The collection’s importance was recognized when it was nationally designated as a Tangible Folk Cultural Property, and its major items are on display at the Ako City Museum of History.
