46.The Funachinginjoho
■Commentary
From the 17th century onwards, the Onishi family, who ran a merchant ship business out of Sakoshi, set sailors’ wages for trips from Sakoshi to 72 other ports throughout the country based on distance traveled. This wage system, referred to as the Funachinginjoho, is written in vermillion lacquer on a 181-cm-wide 23.5-cm-tall wooden plank. The shipping destinations listed are in areas throughout Japan, including various regions of Kyushu, the coastal regions along the Japan Sea (Hokuriku, Tohoku, and Hokkaido up to Matsumae), Osaka, and Edo. It is a precious piece of history from which we can see the large range over which Sakoshi’s merchant ships operated in Japan, and in Heisei 7 (1995), the Funachinginjoho and related documents were designated as a Tangible Cultural Property of Ako City.
