In Enpo 8 (1690), aiming to stabilize its finances, Ako Domain issued hansatsu (paper currency issued by a feudal domain), took up gold and silver coins, and required the use of hansatsu for almost all transactions involving salt. This hansatsu is a precious piece of the history of Ako Domain’s salt policy. However, following the Ninjo (“injury by sword”) Incident in Genroku 14 (1701), in which Asano Naganori attacked a high-ranking shogunate official at Edo Castle, almost all of the hansatsu was collected in exchange for sixty percent of its face value and destroyed, and only five pieces still exist. The two that remain in Ako City, a silver ten-monme bill and a silver two-bu bill (monme and bu were currency units for silver coins), were designated together as a Cultural Property of Ako City in Heisei 29 (2017). Both are privately-owned, but replicas are stored (not currently on display) at the Ako City Museum of History.
