■Commentary
In the garden of the Miyazaki brothers` birthplace, trees remain which tell the tale of the revolutionary actions of Toten Miyazaki. In front of the veranda where Sun Yat-sen and Toten sat together, there is an old white plum tree, over 200 years of age, that is visible in a commemorative photo taken when Sun Yat-sen came to Arao in 1913. This white plum tree is said to have been transplanted from Dazaifu by an ancestor of the Miyazaki family, as legend has it that Sugawara no Michizane (who is enshrined at Dazaifu) was a distant ancestor of the Miyazaki family. The tree has become a symbol connecting Arao with areas associated with Sun Yat-sen.
Behind the "Plum Tree of Friendship" lies a peony garden. In front of the garden gate stands a sacred fig tree, a rare sight in Japan. These trees were first planted by Toten, who brought back saplings when he traveled to China and Thailand to support the revolutionary movement. They still bloom beautiful flowers to this day, and every April, a peony tea party is held to coincide with the flowering of the peonies.
