The blue-spotted mudskipper is a member of the goby family, measuring 18-21 cm in size. It has light blue spots on its back and charming heart-shaped pupils. It is herbivorous, feeding on algae and other organisms that grow on the surface of the mud in the tidal flat.
The shuttles hoppfish is also a member of the goby family, measuring 6-8 cm in size, with black vertical stripes and frog-like eyes. Although a fish, it is not a good swimmer and often stays out of the water. It is sometimes mistaken for a blue-spotted mudskipper due to its similar appearance!
Both blue-spotted mudskippers and shuttles hoppfish can breathe through their skin when out of water.
