13.Nakanomon
■Commentary
Lying in between the stone foundations on the left and right was Nakanomon, the 2nd gate within the castle grounds. Currently, you are looking at where the gate stood from the inside. Structurally, Nakanomon consisted of a gate on the bottom, and a small guardhouse built on top. There was also a hut built on top of the stone foundation on the lefthand side called "Nakanomon House." The records indicate that Nakanomon Gate had a width of 17 meters, and a depth of approximately 6 meters. The chief retainer would stay here in the case of an emergency, and this gate thus served as an important facility, symbolic of Hamada Castle. Also, it was thought that geographically, Nakanomon gate acted as a border, and the areas within the border were seperated in two. The area on the hillside was called Ninomaru, and the area on level ground was referred to as Sannomaru.
Behind this plated description were two guardhouses that were occupied by government officials as well as the remnants of a well in the ravine on the right side.
