20.Four Arch Bridge, Imafuku Tunnel Four and One Arch Bridge
■Commentary
The Four Arch Bridge became designated as a Civil Engineering Heritage by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE) by the name "Imafukusen Arch Bridge Group" in 2008. Following this, the bridge started becoming introduced as a kind of symbol. With a nameplate officially recognizing the bridge on its side, the Utsui Neighborhood Council also installed a sign as well.
In front of the bridge lies Imafuku Tunnel Four, which has a length of 82 meters and is the only tunnel that you can freely enter on your own. After going through the entrance, you can find the One Arch Bridge on the other side of the tunnel, and catch a bird’s eye view of the ancient remains from the riverbank below.
If you head down south from the Four Arch Bridge, you can see the Hamada Expressway that has a height of about 24 meters. The place where the bridge piers supporting the expressway stand were once used as a roadbed for the railroad. The bridge of the past and present became one, and is the perfect place to see an exquisite site.
