This bridge is one of the existing remnants from an abandoned railroad originally planned to be part of the Imafuku-sen line. It is currently used as a city road, and if you go through the door next to the sign and look up from the bottom of the bridge, you can see that the bridge has four arches.
Although Megane-bashi is its official name, the bridge is more widely known as Orochi Naki-bashi. This name originated from the spot underneath the bridge where sounds of a bubbling stream can be heard echoing loudly. The arched shape of the bridge is reminiscent of the body of Orochi, a giant serpent featured in the traditional performing art of Hamada City known as "Iwami Kagura." Legend has it that after hearing the Imafukusen would never be completed, Orochi grew sad and began crying with grief. It’s believed that Orochi’s cries are the cause of sound being amplified in the one spot underneath the bridge, and thus locals gave it the name Orochi Naki-bashi, the crying serpent bridge. Orochi Naki-bashi is not only a place to see the remnants of an arched bridge up close, but where one can enjoy experiencing the different sounds found in areas underneath.
