It is said that this sakura tree was planted by the deceased owner, Ohira Tomitaro’s ancestor to use as a way to tether his horses. The house name of his ancestor and the name of the area were both called "Obira", so the sakura tree became known as "Misumi Obira Zakura." This particular species of sakura was also named "Obira Zakura." Misumi Obira Zakura is a valuable species for the reason that it has characteristics of both higanzakura and mountain sakura. The buds have a yellowish tinge to them, which is the feature of higanzakura. And the branches and leaves have the characteristic of mountain sakura. Misumi Obira Zakura is approximately 660 years old, 7 meters tall, and has branches spanning 24 meters east and west and 29.9 meters north and south. The blossoms are a beautiful white that make the magnificent tree look almost like a small mountain of snow when in full bloom. There were originally 11 boughs when the tree became designated as a national natural monument in 1935, however, only 4 remain due to natural disasters such as forest fires and typhoons.
