These are the remains of a fortified residence once referred to as Matsutake Castle. Originally a branch castle of the Nonaka clan, the site later became the domain of Toshiyasu Kuriyama, one of the famed “Twenty-Four Generals of the Kuroda clan,” after the fall of Nagaiwa Castle and the redistribution of territories. Kuriyama established Hirata Castle as his residence. Daizen Kuriyama, well known from the historical episode known as the Kuroda Disturbance, was the son of Toshiyasu and spent his childhood here. Today, portions of the stone walls from the Kuroda era still remain on the site.
