22.Saijōji Temple
■Commentary
Saijōji is a temple of the Jōdo Shinshū Honganji-ha tradition, enshrining Amida Nyorai as its principal deity. When the Ōuchi clan, rulers of Buzen Province as shugo daimyo (feudal lord), took control of the region, they donated temple lands to establish Saijōji as their family temple. From that time onward, successive generations of the Ōuchi family served as the temple’s chief patrons.
The wooden plaque displayed at the front of the temple bears the calligraphy of Yoshitaka Ōuchi, a prominent warlord of the Sengoku period (1467-1615). The Sengoku period was a time where civil wars and unrest took place almost continuously as daimyos fought for control of the country.
In modern times, Yoshitane Hirata, who played a key role in obtaining scenic-site designation for Yabakei, contributed to the temple’s restoration and reconstruction.
