01.Jangseung and the Monument of Honor of Koma no Kokishi Jakkō
■Commentary
Over 2000 years ago, Koguryo was born in East Asia. Koguryo was called Koma, and around the time it perished in 668, many people of Koma moved to Japan and settled there. The main enshrined deity of our shrine, Koma no Kokishi Jakkō, is said to have roots in the Koguryo royal family, and was given Jugoinoge (Junior Fifth Rank), the kabane (an honorific title) of Kokishi by the Yamato Imperial Court. The Jangseung was dedicated by the Korean Residents Union in Japan in 2005 to commemorate 40 years of Japan-Korean amity. The Monument of Honor of Koma no Kokishi Jakkō was donated by the Society of Koma Jakkō in 2016 in commemoration of 1300 years of construction of Koma County. Two sentences from “Shoku Nihongi” having a deep connection to this region are inscribed on the surface of the Monument.
