02.Otsuyama Aso Shrine
■Commentary
Praising the divine virtues of Aso Okamisama, or Aso great deity, Otsuyama Aso Shrine was established in 1199 with the invitation of two deities, Takeiwatatsu no Mikoto and Asotsuhime no Mikoto, from Ichinomiya Aso Shrine, the most important provincial shrine. It is where people have come to pray for prosperity for their homes and hometowns.
Later, in 1395, OTSUYAMA Sukemoto entered the province and became the landowner. The lords of Otsuyama Castle, including OTSUYAMA himself, also greatly admired Aso Okamisama, and it is believed that the third-generation lord of the castle, OTSUYAMA Tsunekado, demolished the main shrine and rebuilt it in Hayama in Sekimachi so he could pray in the morning and evening. However, OTSUYAMA Sukeaki, the sixth-generation lord, found the location inconvenient for morning and evening prayers and consequently moved the main shrine again to its current location at the base of Mt. Otsu, where he practiced his worship routine. With that move, the shrine and the deities within became known as Otsuyama Aso Shrine and Otsuyama Daimyojin, or Otsuyama deity with extraordinary spiritual powers, respectively.
