03.Otsuyama Park
■Commentary
Otsuyama Park is a natural park surrounded by trees and flowers that bloom throughout the four seasons and is open to visitors to wander and explore. The large kabuki-mon, or wooden gate, which serves as a reminder that Nankan Town was once a checkpoint, is the feature to look for when trying to find the park. Two hiking trails leading to the summit of Mt. Otsu have been set up: one on the west, facing Otsuyama Aso Shrine, and another on the northeastern side of the park. From sakura, or cherry blossoms, to wisteria to azaleas, visitors can delight in the changing colors of the flowers in the spring. The park also features a promenade, gazebos, and public washrooms, making it a spot to relax for those who stop by. During the hanami, or flower viewing season for sakura, azalea, and all the other blossoming flowers, the park is lit up at night and bustling with people. The Daija Slider, a 63 m-long roller slide connected to a giant dragon head, is also very popular with children.
