In 1614, Father Garcia Garces was expelled from Shiki Church, and Adam Arakawa took over his duty to protect the church. Having persisted in his faith despite being persecuted for three months, he was executed by beheading. On June 1, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI beatified 188 Japanese martyrs including Adam Arakawa, giving them the status of “Blessed”. A monument for Adam quietly stands at the place where he was beheaded and martyred.
