11.Ruins of Shozui Castle and the Remains of Shugomachi Shozui
■Commentary
Aizumicho Shozui was the place where the shugo (military governor) of Awa in the Muromachi era, Mr. Hosokawa established the shugosho (governor’s office) which flourished as the political, economic and cultural center of Awa. Miyoshi, who held the real power of Awa during the Warring States period, was also based in Shozui and frequently made his way to Kinai (a former region near Kyoto). This is also considered to be the place where the production of sukumo Ai was passed down during Miyoshi’s time, and where Ai became what helped develop Awa’ economic base. Large moats, gardens, archeological sites, and many relics have been excavated in the area, providing a glimpse of Awa’s most brilliant period. Today, the area has become the public property of Aizumi-cho, and efforts are being made to turn it into a historic park.
