Inubushi Kyusuke was born as an Ai farmer in Shimonosho, Itano-cho, and he succeeded in improving the Ai dye manufacturing methods in 1781, which contributing greatly to the development of Awa Ai. After revolutionizing the manufacturing methods, instead of keeping it to himself, he trained and guided apprentices to spread the knowledge. Awa’s Ai dye that had improved in quality became known as “true Ai,” and its reputation spread nationwide. A wooden statue of Kyusuke, nicknamed Aikyu-san, is enshrined at Aizen-an. Ai merchants from all over the country who made huge profits from the improved Ai dye would come and visit the Aizen statue to express their gratitude.
