03.Okumura Family Residence
■Commentary
The Okumura Family Residence is a primary example of the magnificent private houses known as "ai yashiki" and was constructed during the Bunka era (1804-1818) of the late Edo period to around 1887. The main building is located on the north side of the large premises, facing the south, and there are thirteen buildings surrounding it, including a room for servants, which is rare in the prefecture, Ai dye facilities on the south, east and west sides, and a luxurious west parlor. The main building has a width of 19.8m and a depth of 9.9m. It is two stories and has an irimoya-styled roof (hip-and-gable roof). From its construction sign, it is known that its main building was built in 1808 and that it was later expanded in 1828 to add the second floor. In addition, the three Ai facilities, unique to ai yashiki mansions, have been brilliantly constructed to accommodate the Ai dye manufacturing process. There are few Ai mansions with buildings so nearly completely preserved as those of the Okumura Family Residence, making it a valuable resource for conveying the Ai dyeing culture.
