In Keicho 10 (1605), when Zento Hachiman Shrine, which was built with hopes for the successful development of the salt farms, was moved to Osaki, it is said that the main shrine building was dismantled and reconstructed at Tonade Ko Shrine. The lion dance performed at the fall festival is a kagurajishi (a lion dance that is performed in front of a temple and includes sacred rites) originating from Ise. It is said that the dance, which incorporates a geijishi (a lion dance performed for entertainment) from the Chikusa River basin, started around the second half of the Meiji period. The dance’s 16 programs have been passed down virtually unchanged from their original forms, and because the dance is elegant and serves as an excellent example of a geijishi, it was designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Ako City in Heisei 8 (1996).
