24.Tabuchi-shi Garden
■Commentary
The Tabuchi family ran salt farms in Higashihama starting from the first half of the Edo period. During the Bunka and Bunsei eras of the Edo period (1804-1830), they owned 106 hectares of salt farms and were the largest salt farm owners in Japan at the time. They also managed Ako Domain’s warehouses during the latter half of the Edo period. They received many visits from successive generations of feudal lords, and the residence was equipped with facilities such as a tea ceremony room for this purpose. The residence is located in the foothills of the mountains which used to overlook the salt farms, and on the flat area, they built the shoin teien, which contained the house and pond garden. The free-standing tea ceremony room and the path leading up to it occupy the slope behind the shoin teien. In Showa 62 (1987), the residence and garden, which represent the lifestyle of salt farm owners in the Edo period, were nationally designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty.
