31.Iwatsuhime Shrine
■Commentary
The shrine was moved to its current location in Tenna 2 (1682) by Asano Naganori and is the only shikinaisha (a shrine that appears in the Engishiki, a roughly 1000-year-old book about Japanese laws and customs) in Ako City. The torii (the entrance gate to the shrine) was built at the tip of a cape jutting into the ocean. Standing above the surface of the water in front of the torii is a lighthouse. It is built on a submerged rock, referred to as gozeniwa and ogoiwa, part of which could be seen during low tide before the lighthouse was built. People prayed at the shrine for the safety of ships at sea, and items made from stone that were donated by those in the salt production business can be found on the shrine grounds. In the past, Shiogama Shrine, also referred to as “Shiogama-san”, was located here, but it was combined with Konpira Shrine and is at a different location. The guardian dog statues in front of the main shrine building have an inscription dated Bunka 13 (1816) and are the oldest engraved guardian dog statues in the city.
