44.The Former Sakoshi-Ura Kaisho
■Commentary
The Former Sakoshi-ura Kaisho was constructed between Tempo 2 and Tempo 3 (1831-1832), and it was used for the administration of the business affairs of merchant ships and the port. Its large-scale kaisho architecture allowed it to double as a tea house for Ako Domain, and when Ako’s feudal lords visited Sakoshi, it served as a place where they could relax. In Showa 5 (1930), it was extensively repaired and became the Sakoshi Public Hall. In Heisei 4 (1992), it was designated as a Cultural Property of Ako City, and between Heisei 5 and Heisei 6 (1993-1994), it was taken apart and reconstructed to restore it to its original form.
