The fishing gear displayed here is, from left to right: a diving suit for tairagi (pen shell) fishing, gear for catching kuzzoko (sole fish), and a net used for nori (seaweed) cultivation.
Tairagi fishing involves entering the sea in a diving suit and searching the seabed with a light to find the bivalves embedded there.
Kuzzoko fishing involves dragging a hoe with prongs along the seabed to startle the fish hiding there, causing them to jump up and be caught in the net behind.
Nori cultivation begins in early spring with the cultivation of nori spores. In autumn, oyster shells with spores attached are placed in the sea along with nets. As the tide rises, the spores attach to the nets where they grow and develop into nori. The Ariake Sea is one of Japan`s leading producers of nori, a food rich in minerals and nutrients.
