Hamada Domain Memorial is a stone monument with an inscription written by a famous Japanese historical novelist named Shiba Ryotaro. The memorial was built on September 23rd, 1989, largely by the citizens of Hamada. The inscription reads: "The people of Iwami are proud, and the grounds for this pride is soley that we are the people of Iwami." The description is beautifully written, and depicts the true nature of the Iwami people, who lived through each day fighting hard through trials and tribulations. After the establishment of Hamada Domain in 1629, the castle town lived on for the next 248 years, and was ruled over by 17 different lords. The legacy of the castle, and the individuals who lived in its surroundings are embedded within this memorial. While spreading their culture to a large audience, the memorial also captures the achievements made, and shares the ideals and worthy deeds of Hamada citizens to future generations. The memorial became a kind of cultural torch to Hamada; something that is precious, that needs to be passed down, and whose light can never be allowed to burn out. Through his dedication and a writer with whom he shared a deep comradery with named Miura Hiroshi, Shiba was able to write the inscription on the memorial.
