22.Group of Bridge Piers Imafuku Tunnel One
■Commentary
This is a rare spot where a completed group of bridge piers and bridge abutments are gathered. A bridge estimated to be 90 meters long was planned to be built here, however construction was stopped in 1940 from a lack of iron supplies due to the effects of WWII, and the bridge girder was never made.
The bridge piers in the river are coin-shaped, and approximately 15 meters tall. Many bridge piers across Japan are boat-like or oblong in shape, however, these were made into a circlular shape in order to reduce the impact of the water flow, and are very rare to find.
If you go up the stairs near the sign, you will reach Imafuku Tunnel One. It is 288 meters long, and is the second longest tunnel in the Imafukusen line. No one can go through the tunnel due to the amount of water accumulated inside. Looking back from the tunnel, you can see the gentle curve of the group of bridge piers aligned together in one sweep.
