23.Mimata Onsen Foot Spa Park
■Commentary
Mimata Onsen was discovered during the late Edo Period (1603~1867) as a quiet, relaxing hot spring along the banks of the Mimata River. When it first opened, water from the hot spring came out from a crack found in a roadside rocks, and many travelers stopped by to soothe their aching feet in the warm water. Soon, word spread about the healing properties the water held for body aches, and the hot spring was flourishing with visitors until the beginning of the Showa Period (1926~1989). Around the time of the Russo-Japanese War (1904~1905), the hot spring acted as an infirmary for wounded troops from the Hamada 21st Infantry. Rich with metasilic acid and a high ph level, the water helps remove dead skin cells and promote new skin to grow. Sanyo-Onoda City University(formerly known as Tokyo University of Science, Yamaguchi) stated that due to the properties that allow the skin to grow healthy and full of moisture, the spring became known as ["Supreme Skin Rejuvinating Water"]. Utilizing its plentiful yield, Mimata Onsen Foot Spa Park became established as a way for visitors to freely experience the fresh, running spring water.
