25.Row of Japanese Cedars at Nagayasu Hongo Hachimangu Shrine
■Commentary
At Nagayasu Hongo Hachimangu Shrine, there is a steep stone stairway from the top of the main shrine leading down to the torii gate. Lined alongside these stone steps are three very old Japanese cedar trees, and two more on the grounds of the main shrine.
Japanese cedars as old as these are rare to find in Shimane Prefecture, and it’s even rarer to find ones that are over 600 years old. Due to this, these cedar trees were designated as a prefectural national monument in March of 1972. The biggest amongst the five cedars has a height of 43 meters, and a girth of 9 meters. It’s believed that this avenue of cedars are remnants of a forest that once existed in the area.
