06.Hamada Castle Ruins, a Sequel to 100 Fine Castles of Japan
■Commentary
Hamada Castle was built on top of a hill with an elevation of 67 meters. During its history, the castle has also gone by the name "Kameyama Castle." Furuta Shigeharu began construction of the castle in 1620, and the castle as well as the surrounding town were believed to be fully built in 1623.
Standing within the main circle of defense on the hilltop known as "honmaru" was the castle keep, and a number of long, thin houses. Next was the area located on the middle of the hill called "ninomaru", which included the second gate and a warehouse that stored gunpowder. On the eastern side of the base of the hill was the second gate from the outside, a magnificent inner gate called "nakanomon" that served as an important symbol of Hamada Castle. Another area called "sannomaru" was also on the eastern side of the hill and contained a large number of buildings within it.
Hamada Castle became recognized as a historical site of Shimane Prefecture on June 12th, 1962.
