16.Furu-Rakan
■Commentary
Opposite Rakan-ji Temple, a chain of hills stretches out like an unfurled folding screen, marked by bizarre rock pinnacles and natural stone bridges. According to legend, stone Buddhist statues once enshrined at Old Rakan mysteriously flew overnight to Rakan-ji Temple, and the surrounding area has since been known as Furu-Rakan (Old Rakan).
Along the scenic walking trail, visitors can encounter numerous stone Buddhist images placed among rock peaks and caves, including a cliff-carved Bishamonten (Guardian Deity) and distinctive Kunisaki-style stone pagodas.
Among these, the seated stone statue of Kannon Bosatsu is especially noteworthy. Inside the statue, a sutra inscribed with the date 1362 and a human tooth were discovered, revealing that the statue was created during the Muromachi period.
