The Hirata Family Residence is a fine example of modern Japanese-style architecture in Ōita Prefecture. It was the home of Hirata Yoshitane, who played a key role in having Yabakei designated as a scenic area. During the Taishō era (1912–1926), a third floor was added to the house to welcome visitors to Yabakei, and it is believed the residence served as a guesthouse for distinguished guests. Through its windows, the mountains that once belonged to the Hirata family stretch out like a painted folding screen, creating a breathtaking view. The house is still used as a private residence, and except during special events or exhibitions, the interior is not open to the public.
