Enshrined in the Ukishima Kumanomasu Shrine are the husband-and-wife gods Izanagi and Izanami. According to folklore, they were the first to hold a wedding ceremony in Japan, and the couple are worshipped as gods of safe childbirth. For this reason, many people visit the shrine to pray for and announce a safe birth. The shrine is affectionately nicknamed “Ukishima-san,” meaning “floating island,” by locals because it appears to be floating in the surrounding pond, and the dreamlike view has become a symbol of the town. Winter mornings make the shrine appear especially mystical because of the steam fog rising from the pond. It is a known photo spot.
