05.Koshodai No Sato Park
■Commentary
Shodai ware is a type of pottery representative of Higo, or present-day Kumamoto Prefecture, and Nankan Town is where it originated. Shodai ware was first created by potters who relocated from Buzen Province to Higo Province alongside HOSOKAWA Tadatoshi, who became the feudal lord in 1632.
On the grounds of Koshodai No Sato Park lie the remains of two pottery kilns, the Kameyaki kiln and the Senoue kiln, both of which are part of the Shodai kiln cluster remains, a prefecturally-designated cultural property. These two renboshiki noborigama, or multi-chambered climbing kilns, that utilize the natural slope of the land, are preserved in their original form.
In addition, there are 150 plum trees planted in Koshodai No Sato Park. At the end of February, they begin to blossom, letting visitors stroll about while enveloped in a fragrance of plums.
With four potteries situated near the park, visitors can enjoy the lush natural landscape and sights of an earthenware village. It is a spot that pottery fans will want to visit at least once.
