In 1566, in response to Shiki Rinsen’s request that Father Torres, who was a mission superior in Japan, visit his island, Brother Almeida was sent, making Shiki in Reihoku Town the first place in Amakusa where Christianity was introduced. Afterwards, Christianity spread from Shiki throughout Amakusa, and Amakusa was called “kirishitan no shima,” or “the Christian island.” Father Torres came to Amakusa later and held two religious conferences in Shiki in 1568 and 1570. It is said that after that, Father Torres died here in Shiki.
