08.Misumi East Port
■Commentary
Misumi East Port was brought into existence in 1899 with the opening of the railroad at Misumi Station. Ships from South Asia would regularly enter the harbor, and the port was rich with activity.
During the Showa period, the port was also lively with tourism, as it served as the gateway to Amakusa, making it an essential transportation hub connecting land and sea in Southern Kyushu. It also became the epicenter of Kumamoto’s trade, manufacturing, and economic development.
Its defining symbol, the Misumi Port Ferry Terminal, was nicknamed the “Pyramid of the Sea” and was a waiting area for passengers back when the Misumi Shimabara Ferry was in operation.
Today, the building is home to an “Uki Piano,” a street piano set up by Uki City that anyone can freely play. The pyramid’s interior is shaped like a spiral staircase, and the sounds of the piano echo beautifully throughout.
