The Tanaka Family Residence is an ai yashiki mansion built on the plains of Ishii-cho on the south bank of the Yoshino River. The Tanaka family Residence was home to Ai masters /merchants who manufactured and sold Ai dye for generations until the Meiji era, after the first generation Harimaya Yoemon settled in this area around the Kanei era (1624-1643) during the Edo period. All of the buildings of the current mansion were constructed between 1853 and 1887, and took about 30 years to build. Blue stones and Muya stones from Tokushima Prefecture were piled up to create the beautiful stone walls surrounding the perimeter, and the main building is surrounded by the Ai dye manufacturing facilities and storehouses. The structure of the residences was optimized for Ai production and sales. It is unique to these ai yashiki mansions and not found anywhere else.
