Ai, the main commercial crop of Tokushima, formerly accounted for an important portion of the industrial economy. In contrast to the southern part of Awa, which was known for its rice, the Yoshino River Basin in the northern part of Awa was known for its Ai production. Aizumi-cho was also actively producing Ai, and Tokumei-mura, Okuno-mura, and Higashinakatomi-mura produced particularly high-quality Ai. There are various tools involved in the process of cultivating Ai and manufacturing it into sukumo Ai and Ai clumps, and they are all preserved and displayed at the Aizumi-cho History Museum “Ai no Yakata.”
