29.Ako Marine Science Museum, The Land of Salt, and the Nearby Mio
■Commentary
Hyogo Prefectural Ako Seaside Park is built on the remains of the Higashihama Salt Farm, and the Ako Marine Science Museum, whose main theme is “Salt and The Seto Inland Sea”, is located in the park. Also in the park is The Land of Salt, which contains reconstructions of salt farms from each period. The reconstructed irihama salt farm uses the existing foundation of the former salt farm, and there are reconstructions of related facilities such as a kamaya, a brine tank, and a salt storage building. The shijoka (structures made of bamboo branches over which seawater was sprinkled to increase evaporation) and ryukaban (the slope down which seawater flowed and evaporated) used at ryukashiki salt farms have also been reconstructed. Activities such as kamadaki (heating brine in a cauldron) demonstrations and hands-on salt-making experiences make use of kansui (concentrated brine) made on-site.Next to The Land of Salt, part of the mio (water channel) from the original salt farm is still there, and visitors can feel the atmosphere of the salt farm of yesteryear.
