11.Castle Keep
■Commentary
The castle keep stood on this right side. According to the records, the keep had three stories. The third floor was 81 square meters, the second floor was 169 square meters, and the first floor was 221 square meters. Altogether, the keep stood 15 meters tall. Records from 1827 stated that from the area around present-day Hamada Fishing Port, you could see "the castle slightly peaking out from the woods" and it is believed that what they saw was the castle keep.
From the castle keep, you could see the castle town, present-day Hamada Fishing Port, and Nagahama Port which is currently known as Hamada Commercial Port. Mt. Taima is the highest of the surrounding mountains above Nagahama Port. This acted as the stage for the second battle between the Bakufu and Choshu troops in 1866. Hamada Domain was an ally of the Bakufu, and they were ultimately defeated by Choshu troops led by Omura Masujiro. After their loss, Hamada Castle was set aflame to prevent it from falling into enemy hands.
