16.Donchichi Kagura Clock Tower
■Commentary
The Donchichi Kagura Clock Tower was built in front of the main exit of JR Hamada Station in October 2003, and was fully funded for by the Japan Lottery Association. Donchichi is a word that children took from the rhythm of the musical accompaniment to kagura, and began using it as a name to call Iwami Kagura.
Every day from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., the top of the clock tower lifts to reveal a stage portraying the Iwami Kagura performance "Orochi", and the mechanical dolls dance to the cheerful rhythm when the clock strikes each hour. The bottom part of the clock tower has different designs on each panel. The front design is made in the image of the stormy waters of the Sea of Japan, and the remaining sides feature pictures of Ebisu, Jinrin, and Orochi, the three representative performances of Iwami Kagura.
