In the Kumamoto earthquake event that occurred in 2016, two earthquakes, each measuring a maximum intensity, or shindo in Japanese, of 7 on the Japan Meteorological Agency’s (JMA) seismic intensity scale, were recorded in Mashiki Town, once during the foreshock on April 14, and then during the mainshock on April 16. It was the first time an event like this, where two earthquakes with a shindo of 7 struck the same place consecutively, had ever been recorded.
