07.Shosho-ji Temple
■Commentary
Shosho-ji Temple was said to have been built during the Muromachi period. It is one of the many historic temples in Nankan Town.
This temple, located in Nakamachi, is also where Prince ARISUGAWA Taruhito set up his headquarters and commanded his troops out towards Takase, present-day Tamana City, and Yamaga during the Seinan War, also known as the Satsuma Rebellion, which broke out in 1877 and is one of the most significant events in the town’s recent history. The two-story temple gate, living quarters, and stone pavement outside the temple gate are just some of the remains that stand today as they did back then. The 257 commanders and soldiers that died in the uprising were laid to rest at Koei Town Military Cemetery and Jonohara Military Cemetery, among others.
