01.Tomioka Castle (Visitor Center)
■Commentary
This is the impregnable Tomioka Castle that endured the fierce attack by forces led by Amakusa Shiro during the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion. Tomioka Castle was constructed by Terasawa Shimanokami Hirotaka of Karatsu Domain in Hizen Province around 1602 (Keicho year 7). After the Rebellion, Yamasaki Kainokami Ieharu ordered the major reconstruction and expansion of Tomioka Castle and was responsible for the overall form of the castle which can be seen today. Tomioka Visitor Center is now located on the ruins of Honmaru (the central compound) and gives you an introduction to Unzen-Amakusa National Park. After enjoying learning about the attractive scenery, history, culture, and environment of the Amakusa area inside of the visitor center, you can go outside and relish the natural beauty of Tomioka.
